Upul is a professional in Information Technology and has extensive ICT and Operations experience in the Ports and Shipping industry. He is currently working for SAGT as the Chief Operating Officer. Upul has joined SAGT at the very inception, in April 1999 as the General Manager – Information Technology and was instrumental in setting up state of the art information technology systems at SAGT. He was entrusted with the additional responsibility of managing the Operations division in 2013. Currently as the COO, Upul is responsible for Operations, Engineering, and IT functions of the SAGT.
His ICT and Port Operations career spans well over three decades and most of which, he has spent in the Shipping and Ports industry. Prior to joining SAGT in April 1999, Upul has held various local and international positions with National Institute of Business Management and American President Lines (APL).
During his career so far, Upul was involved in providing leadership towards implementing several digital initiatives at SAGT in collaboration with various statutory organizations and trade associations, such as ePort platform, digitally signed and encrypted e-Cusdec, e-CDN, e-DO and SAGT e-Delivery Advice.
He was also instrumental in introducing advanced technologies to streamline business processes for the benefit of port terminals and the trade, which made Port of Colombo, one of the best efficient and productive transshipment hubs in the Indian Ocean.
Upul is a professional member of the British Computer Society and an alumnus of the Indian School of Business and the Kellogg’s Business School.
